types of trims

  • Medium Density Fibreboard is the most basic and common material for skirting boards and other trims in Australia. While is the most cost effective material, it is susceptible to permanent swelling if exposed to moisture.

  • Finger Jointed Pine is a step up in quality over MDF. Trims made out of pine are more solid, durable, and long lasting than MDF. This is frequently my personal choice for most projects.

  • Solid hardwood skirting boards and trims are the highest quality of all, they are extremely solid, durable, and most of all - beautiful. If you are going to the trouble of building with hardwood, you are likely wanting to get it varnished instead of painted so that you can see the natural timber. Alternatively hardwood is one of the most weather resistant exterior building materials and will survive for many years.

  • Light Organic Solvent Preservative timbers are specifically manufactured to be used in exterior applications. For example - architraves around external doors. These will typically be sold with a coloured dye (such as pink) to make them easily distinguishable.
